That's all, folks!

After a busy few weeks, we have at last reached the end of the summer term!  We have had a brilliant year, packed with so many different activities.  The children have worked very hard, and can now look forward to a well-earned summer break.

I would like to thank all the children, parents and carers who sent in cards, messages and gifts: it has been a pleasure and a privilege to teach the children this year, and your kindness and generosity is very much appreciated.

It only remains for me to wish you all a wonderful, relaxing summer!

Adventure Playground

Last week, the Head Boy and Head Girl were finally able to officially open the brand new adventure playground, which was organised following a school-wide vote last year.  As they will be leaving us soon, it was only fair that Year 5, who were so instrumental in designing and organising the new apparatus, should have the first go - but since then, each class has been taking it in turns to have exclusive access to the brand new equipment.

Today was 3V's turn, and I think it's fair to say that they made the most of it!  Here are some photos of the children testing the new play equipment!

Summertime...

This afternoon, 3V enjoyed the calm and tranquil atmosphere in the Quiet Garden, spending some time making detailed sketches of the splendid summer flowers, or simply relaxing with a book in the sunshine.  After working so hard all year, it was a well-deserved treat for the children to have time to relax and reflect in such beautiful surroundings.

Sports Day

We have had a very sporty few days here at Swan Lane First School! Yesterday, the whole school enjoyed the annual Round Robin Sports Day, while last Thursday, it was the Key Stage 2 Sports Day, when all the children took part in traditional races.

It was great fun, and the children in 3V won many stickers for coming first, second and third in their races.

A special mention must be made for the four children in the 3V Relay Team, who emerged victorious against the strong competition from Mr Forrester's class!  Well done everyone!

3D Shape Making

3V have been exploring 3D shapes this week, learning to identify and describe 3D shapes using the correct mathematical terms.  Today, we had a go at making our own 3D shapes using polydrons, beginning with simpler shapes such as cubes, cuboids and pyramids, and graduating to some really complex polyhedrons.

Disco Fever!

3V enjoyed strutting their stuff at the KS2 summer disco on Thursday evening!  Here are some photo highlights...

Picnic Lunch

At lunchtime on Thursday, for a special treat, the whole school was allowed to enjoy a picnic lunch on the school field.  It was lovely to be able to sit in the shade and enjoy an al fresco meal!

Science Boffins

On Thursday, we had a visit from the science boffins!  After an exciting assembly, with plenty of audience participation, 3V had a science workshop linked to our studies of the animal kingdom.  We looked at how animals use camouflage to hide from both predators and prey, and looked at how optical illusions can trick our brains into seeing things differently.

In the afternoon, the whole school gathered on the playing field for a rocket launch!  It was very exciting!

We thank Mr Johnson and the science boffins for organising such a fun and interesting day for us.
