Measuring length

Over the past two weeks, the children in 3V have been learning to measure in metres, centimetres and millimetres, as well as converting different measurements between the different units in order to add and subtract them.

This afternoon, we made the most of the sunshine and went outside to measure the playground and playing fields.  First the children estimated the length and width of the playground, and then worked in teams to measure as accurately as possible.  There was some variation between the results of the different groups, so we discussed how and these discrepancies could have arisen.

PSHE - Healthy Me!

The theme for our PSHE lessons this half term is 'Healthy Me.'  Last week, the children set themselves some different exercise and fitness challenges, and this week, the focus moved towards making healthier food choices.

As a class, we explored what makes a food a more or less healthy choice - there was a lot of interesting discussion about whether some foods can be healthy in some ways but less healthy in other ways.  We concluded that we can all enjoy all different kinds of foods - but it was important to get the balance right to make sure that our bodies continued to work properly and have all the nutrients and energy they need.

All the children knew that fresh fruit and vegetables were really healthy food choices, but when it came to looking at packaged foods, it was trickier to decide.  We looked at food labelling, and discovered that it was sometimes rather confusing to navigate.  The nutrition labels on the different packets we looked at were all presented in different ways, so we had to be really careful to read them properly.  We had a discussion about why manufacturers might want to make this information less than clear to shoppers.

Finally, the children did some group work, discussing and ordering different foods according to their sugar content.  When the answers were revealed, there were some surprises - some foods which might seem like healthier choices were actually packed with sugar!

RE - Palm Sunday

Today in RE we learnt about the four main events of Holy Week. We looked at the story of Palm Sunday which marks the start of Holy Week and then made palm leaves. We re-enacted the story and waved our palm leaves as people did to welcome the arrival of Jesus into Jerusalem.

Library Visit

As part of our World Book Week activities, 3V enjoyed visiting the school library today to explore some of the non-fiction books available to borrow.  Owing to Covid restrictions, we have not been able to visit the library together as often as we normally would, so it was a real treat to spend time choosing some interesting books today.

World Book Day 2022

Today is World Book Day!  All the children enjoyed dressing up as their favourite book character, and we spent the day enjoying a variety of literary activities, including designing new book covers, making bookmarks, playing guessing games and quizzes and indulging in some wonderful quiet reading time. We also had a visit from Mrs Hurst, who read a story to the class.

Earlier this week, the children in 3V also took part in a 'Book Buddies' activity, sharing their reading books with some of the children in 5B.

Keeping Evesham Tidy

Over the next two weeks, all the children at Swan Lane will be taking part in an initiative from Wychavon District Council to help keep our communities clean and tidy.

Litter is a big problem in Evesham, as people are unfortunately not very good at putting their rubbish in the bin, or taking it home with them to be disposed of safely.  Cans, bottles and plastic wrappers take many hundreds of years to biodegrade, and present a danger to wildlife as well as making the town look and feel unpleasant.

Under the guidance of Karen from Little Litter Warriors, we visited Jubilee Park on a mission to collect as much litter as possible.  We found a huge amount of rubbish strewn along the hedgerows - we collected bags and bags of cans, bottles, sweet wrappers and crisp packets, some of which were over 20 years old!

We thank Karen for helping us to make Evesham a more beautiful place to be, and Mr Smith for organising the activities for us.
