This week in Year 3 we have been doing a lot of cooking! Following our tasting session last week, the children designed their own red pepper tarts using combinations of raw pepper, roasted pepper and pepper puree. We also planned our recipe for rhubarb crumble, and looked at important aspects of kitchen hygiene.
Yesterday, we made a good start on preparing our ingredients. The children learnt how to chop fruit and vegetables safely with sharp knives using the 'bridge' technique, taking care to keep their slices similar sizes to help them to cook evenly. We set aside some of the peppers, and then roasted the rest in olive oil with a little salt and pepper. Mrs Greaves then used a blender to puree some of the roasted peppers. We noticed that the blending process changed the colour of the peppers from red to orange.
They also learnt how to make a crumble topping, rubbing together butter and flour to make a breadcrumb texture. We sweetened both the mix and the rhubarb with a little sugar and were then able to assemble our crumble ready for the oven. Once the crumble was cool, the children were all able to try some.
This morning, we assembled our red pepper tarts, using squares of puff pastry. The tarts were baked in the oven and then, once cooled, decorated with some additional raw pepper. They looked very colourful, and hopefully tasted as good as they looked!
Next week, we will review and evaluate our work.
