Forest School Fun and Games

This afternoon, it was 3V's last trip to Forest School for this academic year.  Under the supervision of the Forest School teacher, Robbie, and Mrs Sanders, the children had a brilliant afternoon playing in the woods, building dens and taking part in a Scavenger Hunt.  The children also learnt to use a saw safely with help from an adult.

Unaided Writing - w/b Monday 9th November 2020

For this week’s Unaided Writing, we are going to be writing a letter to Mr. Twit, from Roald Dahl’s, ‘The Twits’.   You can listen to the audiobook here.

It would be useful if you could discuss the following with your child in preparation for Unaided Writing: 

• Discuss and practise using the word of the week ‘astonishingly’
•  Think about where your child might have seen/met Mr Twit (e.g. in the park, in the town centre, etc)
• Think of wow words to describe what Mr Twit looks like, as well as what he is like as a person.
• Practise using connectives such as ‘despite’, ‘meanwhile’, ‘although’ and ‘however’.
• Think about your opinion of Mr Twit and what Mrs Twit’s opinion might be 

Anything that children bring in before Friday can be used to assist with writing during the week, but unfortunately cannot be used for the Unaided Writing task itself.

Friday 6th November 2020 - Work for Children in Self-Isolation

Good morning!

I hope you are keeping safe and well at home, and are ready for today's challenges!  All the resources you will need for today's lessons can be found in the 3V Resources Folder.

Literacy

For our Big Writing today, we will be writing a character description of Mr Twit.  This week, we are working towards:

• Using ambitious vocabulary, including our Word of the Week - pungent.
• Using a variety of openers, including adverbs (e.g. Shockingly, Disgracefully etc) and beginning a sentence with a conjunction (e.g. Because he never washes, Mr Twit emits a pungent stench.)
• Using correct punctuation, including capital letters for names and new sentences.

I have put a copy of my lesson slides, which includes my model text, in the 3V folder. Read through the model text and highlight any ideas that you could steal for your own work, and then have a go at completing your own Big Writing.  If possible, find a quiet space at home to complete your work, and listen to some gentle background music as you write.

In addition to your Big Writing, please spend at least 15 minutes reading a book of your choice today, and practise this week's spellings - there is a copy of the spelling sheet in the folder.  To make your spelling practice more interesting, why not try a Spelling Scribble?  Here is an example:

Maths

In maths, we will be reviewing subtraction of 3 digit numbers with exchanges.  You can watch a video lesson to support your learning here, and I have put the activity resources which link to the video lesson in the 3V folder.  If you have a printer, you can print the sheet out and write directly on it; if not, you can do your working out and write the answers in your Home Learning book - if you do that, please remember to write down the question numbers so I can mark it more easily!

Humanities

For geography, we are starting our new topic of Volcanoes!  We will be finding out about the structure of the planet earth - what lies beneath the earth's surface? You can watch a fascinating video to support your learning here and then complete the activity sheet in the resources drive.  Then, you can make an interactive, lift-the-flap diagram of the earth's structure (there is a template in the resources drive, or you can make your own).  

When you have completed your work, please send copies in to school by emailing the school office so that I can review it.

Glorious Glockenspiels!

The children in 3V had fun this afternoon getting to grips with glockenspiels!  As part of our music studies in Year 3, the children are developing their understanding of the language of music, learning how music is written on a stave, and finding the pulse or beat of the music when they listen and play.

Part of the Year 3 curriculum also includes learning to play basic pieces on a tuned instrument, such as a glockenspiel, which is where our lessons began today...

Welcome back!

Good morning and welcome back to school!  I hope you had a relaxing week's holiday, recharging your batteries ready for more exciting challenges this half term.

This half term, we will be focusing on our new topics of Rocks and Volcanoes, and learning more about the Hindu celebration of Diwali, as well as developing our skills and understanding further in maths and English - and as always, we will have plenty of fun along the way!

I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone, and I hope you are too!
