Forest School Fun

3V enjoyed their first week of Forest School activities on Friday - here are some photos of all the fun they had.

Music - Reggae

Recently in our music lessons in 3V, we have been learning all about reggae, focusing in particular on the song 'Three Little Birds' by Bob Marley and the Wailers, which was first released in 1977 on the album 'Exodus.'

This famous song was familiar to most of the children in the class, who really enjoyed the cheerful rhythm in the song, and finding different ways to follow the pulse of the music.  

"It's a happy song" declared one of the children.  Others agreed that they liked the 'positive' and 'reassuring' message in the lyrics, while others felt it reminded them of summer.  Not many children were familiar with the reggae genre, so we found out where this style of music originated, and a little bit about Bob Marley himself.

We had a first practice at performing the song all together - some of the lines are quite tricky to time correctly, but hopefully we will be able to perfect our performance in the coming weeks!

Literacy - Retrieving and Recording Information

This morning for our literacy lesson, we began researching all about life in Roman towns and cities, to get a flavour of what it was like to live in Ancient Roman times, and what facilities a wealthy Roman might expect to find in their local town or city.

We will be using this research to help us design our own Roman towns, incorporating all the important buildings that a Roman citizen would need to live comfortably and participate in social and political life.

The children were fascinated to find out all the little details about life in Roman times, and were also practising their reading skills by retrieving and recording the information they found.

Literacy Work - w/b Monday 17th January 2022

For our literacy lessons over the next few weeks, we will be building on our historical  studies of the Roman period, beginning by researching about life in Roman towns and cities.  We will then be 'Roman town planners' and design and describe our own Roman town, incorporating all the important civic buildings that made Roman towns such civilised places to live!

To help your child at home, you could:

1. Find out about some important Roman buildings, such as Bath Houses and the Colosseum.

2. Practise using the word of the week, gargantuan.

Any work that we complete at home can be used to support our class work and Big Writing, which we will complete on Friday 28th January.

Reading Skills: Skimming and Scanning

Over the next two weeks, in their Literacy lessons, the children in 3V will be undertaking a project all about Big Cats. At the end of next week, they will produce a Non-Chronological report all about different kinds of Big Cats.

In order to gather all the information for the report, the children have been carrying out their own research using library books and internet resources.  They have been practising their 'skimming and scanning' skills to retrieve all the information they need to describe, compare and contrast four different types of Big Cat: Lions, Tigers, Cheetahs and Leopards.
