As part of our Design and Technology studies this term in 3V, we are going to be designing and creating an Italian Salad. This links broadly to our geographical studies of Italy and the Bay of Naples, as well as our recent work in PSHE and science covering healthy food choices and eating a balanced diet.
We had a look at some different Italian foods - the children could think of lots of different delicious Italian dishes such as lasagne, risotto and ice cream - and then looked specifically at different kinds of salad. The children were encouraged to think critically and discuss which salads looked the most appealing and why. Most children were drawn to brightly coloured salads which looked as though they were bursting with flavour.
Then it was time for the best bit: tasting different ingredients. Mrs Vaqueiro asked the children to think about not only the taste of each food but also the appearance, smell and texture, and to record their thoughts about each one in a table.
The children tried three different Italian cheeses (mozzarella, parmesan and gorgonzola), some salami, some roasted peppers and both black and green olives. It's fair to say that some of the ingredients received a mixed response, but the salami proved very popular indeed!
